Media arts nonprofit Asian Cinevideo (ACV) will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year with special additions to their annual Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFFF).
The festival will be held both virtually and in-person in NYC from July 31 to August 10 with events such as panels and screenings.
AAIFF Programming Director Kris Montello said in a press release shared with AsAmNews how this year’s festival would return back to its roots.
“On the 50th anniversary of our organization, AAIFF is harkening back to our underground origins by highlighting scrappy young AAPI filmmakers from New York and beyond,” she added. “We hope to continue being NYC’s number one festival for nurturing and celebrating the next generation of Asian American and Pacific Islander filmmakers.”
The monumental festival is not only the longest running, but the first ever event of its kind entirely devoted to telling Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander storytelling. Since its inception in 1978, ACV has been a powerhouse in the community showing films and shorts from around the world, representing over 20 countries. The festival is sponsored by SAG-AFTRA, Amazon MGM Studios, The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) and more.
This year’s theme for the festival is drawn from the Japanese art of Kintsui, a practice where broken objects are mended with gold. It asks audiences to reimagine the concept of transformation, encouraging viewers to see restoration as a process that can make both a community and individual stronger.
For the fiftieth anniversary, the festival will feature iconic independent film director Albert Pyun’s lost 1990 cut of Captain America. The film centers around the superhero’s fight against his famed nemesis Redskull. The festival will also show the 15th anniversary sing-along edition of Fruit Fly, a musical comedy about a Filipina adoptee discovering more about herself and her biological mother.
Ticketing for the general public is now open and can be found on their website, as well as information for their full program and film feature list.
